Lexington, Kentucky
Renovation of Big Blue Course completed in 2001
On-going consulting in progress for the Practice Facilities
DESCRIPTION
Rare is the opportunity for an architect to return to his alma mater for work! In 2000, I did just that, after some convincing with Arthur.
The U Club has two courses, The Big Blue and The Wildcat - all part of a facility formerly known as The Players Club. University Clubs of America purchased the 36-hole complex from Lexington golf developer, Danny McQueen, to add to their portfolio of university themed private clubs.
After pleading my way into the fold, we fine tuned plans to improve both courses. Ultimately there were only funds to give one of the two courses attention - The Big Blue. The existing green surfaces were retained, but the bunkering was adjusted, new tees were built and the fairways were completely overhauled. We essentially gave the course a fresh identity that agreed nicely with the new course operators at the time, University Clubs of America.
Today, the courses remain popular with the members and are very integral in University functions. U Club is also home for both the men's and women's golf teams at UK. More recently, I was asked to return to meet with the coaches and agronomy staff to consider improvements to the practice area(s), all to help make the teams more prepared and competitive and to raise the level of the facilities.
